“. . . . Creatures Big and Small” through January 27 at the Sebastopol Gallery celebrating a decade of art and community. Artist's Reception for ". . . Creatures Big and Small,” will be Saturday, December 9th, from 4–6PM at Sebastopol Gallery, 150 N Main Street, Sebastopol, CA 95472 Rebeca is an assemblage artist who combines objects in unexpected ways. “I think of myself as a whisperer of inanimate objects,” she says. “I often feel true compassion for things that are damaged or thrown away. I see potential in things that are broken, and find beauty in rust and corrosion.” In her work, Rebeca takes a narrative path: “I use these found objects to tell a story, much like a writer uses words. The finished art piece becomes the storyteller, the dream interpreter and memory prod.”
Jeff is a self-taught painter who works in oils. His subjects are frequently animals, and, he notes, “Whether it’s an animal, person or a flower, I consider all of my works to be portraits.” Jeff takes a classical approach to painting, as well: “I’m inspired by the techniques of the old masters and like to take advantage of the movement of the paint and the visible brush marks. While I strive for a sense of realism in my paintings, I always want the viewer to know they are looking at a painting.

“A Walk in the Forest”
Featuring Botanical Paintings by Lucy Martin. Jan 30 - Mar 26, 2017.
Lucy paints in gouache and watercolor, with occasional use of colored pencil. She describes her work and its subject matter this way: “My artwork arises from a deep connection with nature. My paintings express my love of the beautiful and surprising life forms found in the forests I explore. The intense colors and fine detail in these paintings seek to draw the viewer in.”
For more than a decade Lucy has concentrated on portraits of botanical forms that mostly line the forest floor or grow on tree stumps or other plants. As she notes, “Mushrooms or lichen are most often the focal point of my paintings, but they are really small forest landscapes—glimpses of the myriad tiny worlds to be discovered right at our feet, if we only stop and look.”
Join us at our Artist's Reception on Saturday, February 4th from 4 to 6 pm. Come by, meet Lucy Martin, learn more about her work, and enjoy good conversation and snacks.

"An Invitation to Imagine"
Featuring Pastel Paintings by Teri Sloat, Nov 22 - Jan 31.

Many people know me first as a picture book writer and illustrator, a career which I continue to enjoy. But for the last several years I have had the privilege of joining the word of gallery art. I have two very different needs when I do my art. One is to be outside painting in the weather, whatever it may be (well, almost), and the other is to drift into scenes floating through my mind which, when put to paper or canvas, tend to take me to a more imaginary place.
I have an intense love for pastels that is not different than the love I had for my first box of 64 crayons. I love working with the colors of light, choosing the right colors to make the light bounce from object to background and creating transitions from light to shadow. Working with pastels on sanded paper is a sensual pleasure. The sanded paper lets me apply layer after layer of pastel in broad strokes or fine marks.
Perhaps because I am a writer of fiction, I have never been able to be a realist. While I admire realism and learn from it, I seem to want to tell my own story, whether it is about the hills and bays of Sonoma and Marin County, or images of children hanging stars at night.
I love my personal clients, and have found over the last few years that one of my great pleasures it to see my work going into more hospitals and clinics, including our own Santa Rosa Sutter Hospital and Sonoma West Medical Center among others.
Join us for a Holiday Reception: Dec 1 from 5 to 7pm. Come by and meet the artist.

"Above and Below - Into the Deep"
is the title of our newest exhibit, featuring member artist Susan St. Thomas. This collection of watercolor and combined media paintings is inspired by nebulae and galaxies photographed by the Hubble telescope as well as the deepest realms of the sea.
In describing her work, Susan says, "I have always been a dedicated stargazer and astrologer, fascinated by the forms created out of gas and dust in deep space, millions of light years from Earth. The mysteries of unexplored realms, both above and below in the sea, allow for unlimited imaginative interpretation."
Her celestial abstracts are beautifully painted with translucent acrylic glazes on textured paper to give the illusion of layers of stardust and swirling gas. The abstract underwater paintings in watercolor are spontaneous intuitive works created without initial plans. Susan adds, "I let them flow, run, drip and splatter then pull together the composition interacting with the unexpected surprises."
The show runs from August 8 - October 1, 2016
Join us for an artist's reception on Saturday August 27, from 4-6pm. Come by and meet the artist.

Connie Robeson's latest pit fire on Facebook

When member artist Connie Robeson pit fired a new batch of pots at Dillon Beach recently, member artist Kalia Kliban was on hand with her camera. (Kalia also provided wood chips from her bowl turning.)
The whole process from digging in the sand to unloading the finished pots can be seen in an album on Facebook.
Connie Robeson

With Earth itself as her inspiration, Connie Robeson sculpts iconic masks, animal totems, rattles, plates, bowls and vases rich with texture and earthy color. Her clay monoprints glow with exotic colors and shapes. Born in Germany, she studied at the University of Heidelberg, and has lived in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Marin County, and San Francisco. She now lives in Rohnert Park, and devotes her life exclusively to her art.

James Reynolds showing at the Hyatt Hotel.

For several months, James' paintings will be exhibited in the restaurant and lobby of the Hyatt Vineyard Creek Hotel at 170 Railroad Street in Santa Rosa. It's a beautiful space, with luscious deep colors on the walls that suit his paintings perfectly.

Virginia Harrison - New Guest Artist

We're glad to welcome Virginia Harrison's large woven bronze sculptures to our gallery. She begins by casting a base in bronze, then welding bronze spines to the base. She then weaves bronze wire, a technique that is her own innovation.
Combining bronze casting and weaving connects me to some of the most ancient human activities, and offers a way of lending grace and movement to bronze.
I was raised at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, where gold and silver mines gave me an early understanding of metal. I combine the ignitive force of casting with the delicacy of weaving. I sculpt each base in wax, then cast it in bronze. I weld spines to the base and weave thin bronze wire around the spines. Some shapes are deliberate, others evolve during the process.
