TAKING THEIR TIME, a man and woman savored the locally made jewelry, art and crafts at the Sebastopol Gallery. The couple might have been in the gallery store for two hours when they brought a purchase to Kalia Kliban, the participating artist then at the cash register.
The couple had selected a ring, a lovely creation of jewelry designer Stacy Low. Kliban made the sale and thanked the visitors for coming in.
They were near the door when the fellow dropped to a knee, then asked the new owner of the ring if she would marry him.
“Yes!” she screamed, then came the sweetest kiss.
Kliban wished all the best to two more happy customers of the Sebastopol Gallery.

New LED Lighting
The artists of Sebastopol Gallery are very pleased that we have replaced all of our halogen flood lights with energy efficient LED's (17 watts versus 60 to 90 watts). The new bulbs put out a very clean, bright and even light, while using a fourth to a fifth of the energy. They also burn much cooler, so we will not be running the air conditioner, except during extreme summer heat. The space has been noticeably cooler since we made the change.
Aside from saving money for our business, we are very glad to do our part for the environment. The LED's are 100% recyclable, whereas the used halogens had to go in the landfill. The new bulbs should last eight to ten years, while the old ones needed to be replaced about every six months, which means the resource requirements to manufacture them are considerable. But the biggest impact is on energy savings to run the lighting in the gallery. That efficiency gets magnified when the AC unit sits unused week after week. In the spirit of protecting the planet, we encourage other art galleries and businesses of all kinds to make the switch to LED's.

a terrific opportunity for an artist...to join with other artists in helping to increase public awareness and interest in the book arts.
James Reynolds at Pepperwood Preserve

This from member artist James Reynolds: I painted with a group organized by Bill Gittins this past December 17th at Pepperwood Preserve. The group will meet four times at, or very close to, the change of seasons. We will paint the same scene each time, responding to the ways that the site changes through the year. Katie Gerber, an Earth Science professor at SRJC, spoke before we began painting about the science side of the seasonal changes: Earth's rotation, its tilted access, sunlight's various effects, etc.
Teri Sloat in Alaska

Member artist Teri Sloat is having a show at Stephan Fine Arts in the Captain Cook Hotel in Anchorage, Alaska, starting March 2, the day before the Iditarod.

Kalia also has many fine cabinet making projects to her credit, and is also much appreciated as an English Country Dance caller.
Welcome, Kalia!

Japan Friendship Concert a lovely success

Sebastopol Gallery's first concert, a benefit for Japanese tsunami relief, was a great pleasure for all who attended. The music provided by Hale Thatcher (flute), Pete Tomack (guitar) and Sahar Pinkham (table) was beautiful, and the poetry offered by Larry Robinson and Trout Black was moving. We had a sweet and attentive audience, several of whom suggested we hold monthly First Friday concerts. We collected a generous amount to send to Japan via Direct Relief International.
James Reynolds Honored at Apple Blossom Fair

"On Friday, April 15, 2011 Member artist and our current Director James Reynolds had a big night at the opening reception for the Apple Blossom Art Show. Several members will be showing their own illustrations, book covers, handmade books, and book related paintings and ceramics. In addition, we will host artist talks on their relationship to books. For details see our Events page and the Bibliophoria website.
Acclaimed sculptor Colin Lambert joins our gallery.
(Sadly, Colin died in 2015. We miss him very much.)

We are honored to have Colin Lambert as our newest member. Working primarily in bronze, but also using faux-limestone, cast stone, fiberglass, and ceramic tile, Colin has created monumental art for many public installations in California, Oregon, Connecticut, and England. He also creates beautiful, intimate smaller bronze figures, as you can see when you next visit us.
For a beautiful description of his work, visit the website of the Rob Schouten Gallery.

Teri Sloat is Upbeat Times' Artist of the Month

The November issue of Upbeat Times featured Teri Sloat's story of her work as illustrator and painter: "Addicted to Art." She describes the lucky circumstances of her entry into the world of illustration while working with the Yup'ik people in Alaska. She also shares her more recent discovery of the delights of plein air painting in the beauty of California landscapes. Story on page 20.
Saiz Family Portrait completed.

This oil painting was commissioned by a gentleman, Frank Saiz, who came through the gallery in December. It was a very special gift for his wife, Norma. I managed to complete it just in time for Christmas.
The painting is based on a photo from 1989, so the children are now in their twenties!
The family has graciously agreed to display the painting in the gallery at the reception in March.
Rebeca Trevino - New Artist

Rebeca Trevino's complex, assemblage boxes are our newest addition--colorful, intriguing, and magical.
As each box emerges, it develops its own personality and strength. At the heart of my work is the absolute need to recycle things, to rescue stuff that has been forgotten or thrown away. In a sense the “stuff” gets reborn, it gains new meaning, a new career.
Teri Sloat Interviewed by Children's Literature Network
